Hi-
I am with TomCat, the Clymer manual is worth the $25.00 or so retail. Check eBay for a cheaper copy. It's been a good companion to just owning the Savage. I've changed my oil 3 times so far on my bike and I follow the manual closely. I assume in a few more changes I'll be "flying solo".
Also, the last time I changed the oil, when I "broke" the drain plug loose, I burned my under forearm really good on the exhaust pipe. I ran the bike like instructed before the oil change so every thing was really hot. From now on it's long sleeves when I change my oil.
Also, the oil filler cap is another tricky part to the job. It's tough to get a wrench on. I found that the "Gator grip" socket I have works really good. I'd buy one just for doing Savage oil changes alone! Search eBay or the web for the socket.
Good luck...
